Sisällissodan voittoisa kenraali Gustaf Mannerheim nousi vuoden 1918 toukokuussa ruotsinlaivaan pettyneenä Suomen saksalaissuuntaukseen ja kuningasseikkailuun. Mannerheim sai tehtäväkseen hankkia itsenäiselle Suomelle länsivaltojen tunnustuksen. Joulukuussa Mannerheim valittiin kuitenkin Suomen valtionhoitajaksi. Vuoden 1919 keväällä Mannerheim suunnitteli yhdessä Britannian sotaministerin Winston Churchillin kanssa hyökkäystä bolsevikkien punaiseen Pietariin. Operaatiosta ei tullut mitään, koska Venäjän valkoisen hallituksen päämies ei suostunut tunnustamaan Suomen itsenäisyyttä. Mannerheim kärsi presidentinvaalissa tappion Ståhlbergille ja lähti jälleen ulkomaille. Vuonna 1931 presidentti Svinhufvud nimitti Mannerheimin kassakaappisopimuksella sodanaikaiseksi ylipäälliköksi ja sotamarsalkaksi vuonna 1933. Talvisodassa 1939-1940 Mannerheim johti menestyksellä 105 päivää kestänyttä epätasaista taistelua suurvaltaa vastaan. Sotamarsalkka on itsenäinen jatko-osa kirjailija
